ACEH – Rotary Indonesia’s humanitarian efforts have once again been in the spotlight following the devastating floods that hit Aceh and North Sumatra. While many parties were still debating and awaiting official action, Rotary District 3410 immediately mobilized to distribute aid, logistics, and volunteers to the affected areas.
This initiative was led by several Rotary figures, including PDG Sumantoro (Sam) and the President of the Rotary Club of Medan Deli, David Kamidin, who served as the aid campaign chair. To the public’s surprise, Bibi, the 78-year-old former Rotary president, personally traveled through difficult locations to deliver aid to flood-affected residents.
Support wasn’t limited to one club; various Rotary organizations were also involved. The President of the Medan Talenta Rotary Club, Erick Young, and past presidents of the same club were also actively involved. A total of 1,120 Rotary members from District 3410 were mobilized to ensure that aid was distributed evenly to the community.
This action wasn’t the first time Rotary had been on the front lines. During the 2006 Aceh tsunami, Rotary District 3410 also carried out a large-scale humanitarian effort. Now, history is repeating itself with a stronger and more organized sense of solidarity.
Rotary Indonesia also expressed its appreciation to the media, especially the Editor-in-Chief of Radar Jakarta, Faisal, who continued to publicize Rotary’s humanitarian efforts, garnering widespread attention and inspiring more people to step up to help.
Additional assistance and moral support also came from District 3420, with the full attention of Governor Dyah Anggraini, as well as from Regional Leadership Councils (PDGs) such as PDG Eva and a number of Rotarians from across the region who participated in this humanitarian effort.
“This isn’t just aid, but a tangible manifestation of Rotary’s care and commitment to serving with our hearts. We are here to ease the suffering of our brothers and sisters,” said DG D3410 Sanny Suharli, closing his statement with a respectful Rotary greeting for all volunteers.***
